EXPERIENCE & STYLE:
For over 14 years, I've been instructing yoga classes in New York and Florida. Classes range from beginner to advanced, and from group to private sessions. I currently teach in Myakka City, Florida. In addition to weekly classes, I have experience teaching corporate workshops and in organizing retreats.
While living in Manhattan, I taught yoga at the following centers: 92nd St Y, Health Fitness Corp, Church St. Boxing Gym, Emblem Health, Boom Fitness, Pranavah Yoga, MetLife, Life in Motion Yoga Center, Park Slope Yoga, House of Jai, Dolphin Fitness, New York Yoga, Ballet Academy East, Heart Works, Center for Urban and Community Services, Moody’s Investor Services, NBC, New Field Yoga, Body Smart, and Bally Total Fitness.
I've had the pleasure of sharing yoga with a wide variety of students, including professional athletes, teens, seniors, moms-to-be, the blind, hearing impaired, mentally ill, injured, and disabled.
Why yoga and meditation? Ultimately, we engage in the practice of yoga and meditation to take responsibility for our own peace, in body and mind. Yoga and meditation are the tools. How well and how often we use the tools determines our outcome. Wellness requires effort, dedication, as well as the delicate balance of rest and appreciation. As we explore our potential and possibilities through the practice of yoga and meditation, we find the process will continually unfold, opening to daily discoveries and heightened awareness. My classes provide a space where you can enjoy this process, take time for yourself, expand your abilities, and savor the harmony that movement and meditation can bring.
I received my yoga instructor certification at NY Yoga in 2004 under the tutelage of Michael Gilbert, David Hollander and authorized ashtanga teacher Govinda Kai. Fortunately, living in New York City (until Sept 2014) allowed me the opportunity to continually take classes with some of the world's more prominent yoga gurus, such as Dharma Mittra, Sharon Gannon, David Life, Isaac Pena, and Dana Flynn. For more of my influences, see my gratitude page.
Expanding the spectrum, I'm also a certified prenatal yoga instructor, a certified Pilates instructor, including prenatal Pilates, a certified barre instructor, with many years of ballet training at Ballet Academy East, and an ACE-certified personal trainer, since 2003.
In other studies, I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics at SUNY Oneonta in 1986 and my Masters in Psychology at Hunter College in 1996. My Masters thesis, "AIDS: An Unconventional Perspective" was published in the Journal of Social Distress and the Homeless in January 1998.
